Full Medical Services Return to Americus After Opening of Sumter Regional East
AMERICUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Thirteen months after an EF-3 tornado destroyed Sumter Regional, hospital employees as well the Americus community came together to celebrate the next step of the rebuilding process, with the ribbon cutting of their new interim medical facility. The 76-bed hospital comes fully equipped with state of the art technology...some say it's even better than the old hospital. "It's a surprise how well it came out, seeing it from the beginning... it's just so much more than we expected," said Janice Cottle, an employee at Sumter Regional.

Sumter Regional begins demolition phase with celebration
AMERICUS, Ga. — “Tear it down. Tear it down,” shouted the crowd as the lucky winner, Diana Hall, climbed into the “cockpit” of the bulldozer to be the first to knock down a piece of what Americus has known as Sumter Regional Hospital for the past almost 55 years.
Although the program for the demolition of Sumter Regional started a little early on Wednesday, Sumter Countians poured out in numbers to witness a new beginning for Sumter Regional. Americus Mayor Barry Blount, Sen. George Hooks and Rep. Mike Cheokas, both D-Americus, were among the many guests. They, like others in the community, joined with Sumter Regional in a celebratory event that marked the final good-bye to a “grand ol’ lady.”
Reforming Healthcare
Albany - - We all know there's trouble with health care. Skyrocketing costs, insurance companies that deny claims, too many people uninsured. An advocacy group that wants to solve those problems is traveling the country to spread their message. An Albany woman opened the doors to her home to help.
Susie Smith takes her passion to heart.
"Nursing is my calling. I love it dearly."
She's retired now, but she remembers problems in the healthcare system.
"Working in the hospital for so many years you see so many people come in. People with little or no health insurance stay home until they're too sick."
BISHOP: “WE WILL NOT STOP” UNTIL 10 MILLION CHILDREN ARE INSURED
Washington, D.C. - Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted upon legislation to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and provide health care to 10 million children, including 470,000 Georgia children. The vote followed last week’s failed veto override of another version of the legislation.
The latest version of the SCHIP measure still provides an additional $35 billion to the program over the next five years. However, it responds to House Republicans’ objections to the previous SCHIP legislation by capping income eligibility at 300% of poverty (or $62,000 annually for a family of four), shoring up provisions to prohibit illegal immigrants from enrolling in the program, and requiring that all childless adults be removed from SCHIP by December 31, 2008. The bill was approved by a vote of 265 to 142, and first must be considered by the Senate before it is sent to the President, who has said he intends to veto the legislation.
