Vilsack: $20M set for area Internet

August 18 -- WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a conference call from Washington Wednesday, the head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced $20 million in stimulus funding will flow into several south Georgia counties to allow for broadband Internet service.
Touting it as an investment in economic development and commerce, Vilsack said that $13 million in stimulus funds have been allocated for the development of high-speed broadband in Baker, Calhoun, Early, Mitchell and Miller counties.

(GA-02) today announced his support for H.R. 1586, the Education Jobs
and Medicaid Assistance Act, which passed the House today by a vote of
247 to 161. The bill, which is fully offset by closing tax loopholes
and cutting spending, provides $10 billion for aid to local school
districts to prevent layoffs in elementary and secondary schools, saving
an estimated 161,000 education jobs nation-wide, and 5,700 jobs in the

installations, $142 million in additional Gulf Coast oil spill funding,
$50 million in emergency food assistance, $5.1 billion for FEMA, $37.1

Bishop nomination makes ROTC history
December 22, 2009 - 5:33amFor the first time since the spring of 1996, the Bainbridge High School Air Force Junior ROTC program has had two cadets nominated to the same military academy.
Senior Erick Juarez and 2009 BHS graduate Derrick Akins have been nominated by U.S. Rep. Sanford D. Bishop Jr. to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
In 1996, Cadets Preston Laslie and Natalie Pope were nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., where they both graduated.
