BISHOP INTRODUCES TRANSITIONAL HEALTH CARE LEGISLATION

Bill encourages experienced service members to continue serving, allows service members to receive health coverage during transitional period

 

Washington, D.C. Congressman Sanford Bishop (D-GA), along with Congressmen Steve Buyer (R-IN), Gene Taylor (D-MS), and Jeff Miller (R-FL), recently introduced HR 5609, a bill to provide 180 days of transitional health care for soldiers in the United States Military who choose to voluntarily separate from active duty and join the Selected Reserves (SELRES).

FORT BENNING, Ga. Mar 1 2008–In light of recent allegations by Fort Benning veterans, post officials are now defending changes to Army Regulation 190-56.
The policy mandates that Department of the Army civilian guards and police officers take a physical agility test to keep their jobs.

Bill to provide $6M for center

If the Senate passes what committees in both houses of Congress have already approved, the National Infantry Foundation will be $6 million closer to its goal for the construction of the new Soldier Center at Patriot Park.
"It would be a pretty good Veterans Day gift," said the foundation's director of communications Cyndy Cerbin.
The money is part of the 2008 Defense Appropriations bill, expected to pass through the Senate and gain President Bush's signature.
The money would boost the foundation's fundraising efforts to $76 million, $10 million short of the goal of $86 million.

House of Representatives Approves 2008 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Funding Package

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the fiscal year (FY) 2008 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations bill. The FY 2008 bill represents a $6.7 billion increase in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) budget, the largest single increase in the 77-year history of the Veterans Administration and $3.8 billion above the president’s request. It also includes an $8.2 billion increase in the Department of Defense's military construction budget over FY 2007 levels and fully funds Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) above FY 2007 levels, a request which is expected to allow the completion of lingering BRAC-related construction projects at Fort Benning.

Fought for Veterans, Health Care - Cosponsored the Assured Funding for Veterans Health Care Act of 2005 (H.R. 515) to provide assured adequate level of funding for veterans health care.

Improved Access to Military Health Care -Cosponsored the Honor Our Commitment to Veterans Act (H.R. 3312) to assure health care benefits to any eligible veteran who applies. The legislation terminates an administrative freeze on the enrollment of veterans in the lowest priority enrollment category.
