Supported Teachers - Supported H.R. 2835 to improve recruitment, preparation, distribution and retention of public elementary and secondary school teachers and principals. Fought for Higher Education Opportunity - Cosponsored H.R. 1338 amending the Higher Education Act of 1965 to permit refinancing of student consolidation loans and increasing Pell Grant maximum awards. Supported Higher Education Opportunity - Supported H.R. 1029 to permit refinancing of federal student consolidation loans and to give students freedom to select a student loan consolidator. Fought to Reduce School Dropout Rates - Supported H.R. 547 to improve graduation rates by authorizing the secretary of education to make grants for adolescent literacy programs. Supported Higher Education - Voted for H.R. 4911, the Higher Education Extension Act, to extend programs under the Higher Education Act of 1965. Supported Professional Teachers - Cosponsored the Teachers for Tomorrow,s Career Act (H.R. 4622). This legislation extends the tax deduction for qualified tuition and related expenses and expands the deduction for science, technology, engineering and math professionals who become certified teachers. Fought for Educational Opportunity - Supported H.Res. 2178 calling for adequate and equitable educational opportunities for students in state public school systems. Supported Loan Forgiveness for Teachers - Supported H.Res. 1522 to expand loan forgiveness and loan cancellation programs for teachers, and to provide loan forgiveness and cancellation programs for nurses. Fought for Education Credits - Supported H.Res. 1380 to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to expand incentives for education Supported Music Education - Supported H.Con.Res. 355 stating that music education and instruction are important to a well-rounded academic curriculum and should be made available to all students. Promoted Financial Literacy - Voted for H.Res. 737 advocating awareness of financial education and informing the public of the harm that can occur to people who do not understand personal finances. Honored Ray Charles - Cosponsored H.R. 824 to award a congressional gold medal to Ray Charles for his many contributions to the nation as one of America,s greatest and most influential musical artists.
Honored Coretta Scott King - Cosponsored H.Res. 655 to honor the life and accomplishments of Coretta Scott King and her contributions to the civil rights movement. Agreed to by voice vote.
Honored Louis Braille and Blind Citizens - Supported the Louis Braille Commemorative Coin (H.R. 2872). This legislation directs the Treasury Department to produce $1 coins bearing the image of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille code. Agreed to by voice vote.
Supported Financial Literacy Month - Cosponsored H.Res. 1489 to support the goals and ideals of Financial Literacy Month and promote observing the month with appropriate programs and activities.
