Recent Legislative Accomplishments

DRUGS

Fought to Continue Anti-drug Program - Cosponsored H.R. 790 to reauthorize the public and assisted housing drug elimination program of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

 

GUN OWNERSHIP

Supported the Right to Bear Arms - Cosponsored the Firearms Corrections and Improvement Act (H.R. 5005). This legislation amends firearms provisions of the federal criminal code to lift restrictions that infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens. Bill in committee. Cosponsored the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) Modernization and Reform Act of 2006.

 

Fought to Protect Disaster Victims, Gun Rights - Voted for the Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006 (H.R. 5013) to restrict federal officials from seizing firearms from law-abiding citizens in the event of an emergency or disaster relief.

 

LAW ENFORCEMENT

Fought for Law Enforcement Officers - Cosponsored H.R. 2823, the Police Security Protection Act, which amends the Internal Revenue Code to allow certain law enforcement or private security officers a nonrefundable tax credit of up to $1,200 for the cost of an armor vest.

Protected Rescue Dogs - Cosponsored the Canine Volunteer Protection Act (H.R. 4764) to give dogs used in rescue missions the same protections afforded to animals used in law enforcement.


Protected Law Enforcement Officers - Cosponsored the State and Local Law Enforcement Discipline, Accountability and Due Process Act of 2005 (H.R. 354). This legislation amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to provide standards and procedures for state and local law enforcement and law enforcement officers while conducting internal investigations, interrogating law enforcement officers and during administrative disciplinary hearings; to ensure accountability of law enforcement officers and protect officers, due process rights; and to require states to enact law enforcement discipline, accountability and due process laws.

FOUGHT FOR SAFETY OFFICER BENIFITS

Supported Volunteer Firefighters - Cosponsored H.R. 1088 to remove civil liability barriers that discourage the donation of fire equipment to volunteer fire departments. 

 FOUGHT FOR CHILD SAFETY AND WELFARE

Fought to Protect Communities From Sex Offenders - Supported H.R. 2423 to improve the national program to register and monitor sex offenders or individuals who commit crimes against children.

 

FOUGHT FOR SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS

Supported Neighborhood Crime Prevention- Cosponsored H.Res. 336 requesting that the president focus attention on neighborhood crime prevention and community policing. 

 

Recognize Mentors in Our Communities - Supported the Support Goals of National Mentoring Month (H.Res. 660) to express support for the goals and ideals of National Mentoring Month, acknowledge the work done by mentors and recognize current mentors while encouraging more adults to volunteer.

 

SUPPORTED HATE CRIME LEGISLATION

Fought Hate Crimes - Fought for H.R. 2662 to provide federal assistance to states and local law enforcement to prosecute hate crimes.

 

FOUGHT FOR DECENT HOUSING AND HOMEOWNERSHIP

Promoted Homeownership - Supported the Mortgage Insurance Fairness Act of 2005 (H.R. 3098). The legislation amends the Internal Revenue Code to allow a tax deduction for mortgage insurance premiums and reduces the amount of such deduction for taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes exceeding $100,000.

Supported Low-and Moderate-income Housing - Cosponsored H.R. 1549 to allow home builders and investors a general business tax credit for building or substantially rehabilitating residences for low- and moderate-income individuals in certain areas, including a rural area, an Indian reservation or an area of chronic economic distress.

Supported Homeownership - Cosponsored H.Con.Res. 107 supporting the goal of increased homeownership in the United States and recognizing the importance of homeownership programs, fair lending laws and fair housing laws in achieving that goal.
