Legislators: Georgia employees may see pay raises next year

Second District U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga., spoke at length about agriculture, the importance of reauthorizing the farm bill and cuts in agricultural research programs. He said cuts are being driven by the need to reduce deficit spending. He cited projections made two years ago that if spending continues at the same pace, by 2025 all federal revenue will only be enough to pay the interest on the national debt.

“The question is how do we balance the budget?” he said. “It has to be a mix of increases in revenue and decreases in spending, and what that balance should be is what the fight is all about.”

Bishop said bipartisanship is key to finding the right solution.

It’s well-known that these families live somewhat nomadic lives, with the average stay of three years at a base before packing up and moving. About 800,000 service members move each year.
While drought-weary folks in the Atlanta metro worry that their water will run out before the federal government declares the region a disaster area and funnels in money and other help, farmers out in the country are already getting some relief from Uncle Sam.

It has come to my attention that rumors are circulating that I am considering a run for the U.S. Senate in 2008 against Saxby Chambliss (R-GA). This suggestion is absolutely false.

Agriculture cuts would risk security

It might surprise many Georgians that, despite unprecedented job growth in the Atlanta area, agriculture is Georgia's largest industry.

One out of seven Georgians works in agriculture, forestry or a related sector, according to the Georgia Farm Bureau. Georgia leads the nation in peanut, poultry and pecan production, and is among the top producers of cotton, corn, eggs and tomatoes. It only makes sense, then, for our state's federal representatives to advocate for legislation to preserve this part of our state's economy.

Peanut farmers need storage and handling fees paid for the 2007 crop

Storage and handling fees are not covered in farm bill legislation for the 2007 peanut crop and that has many farmers worried about how they are going to make ends meet. Farmers have already felt the increase of high fuel and fertilizer costs, says Armond Morris, chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commission, and they can't take much more.
