Georgia’s 2nd District

The 2nd Congressional District of Georgia is the largest in the state both in size and in spirit. Bordered by Alabama to its west, and Florida’s panhandle to its south, the 2nd District encompasses all or parts of 32 counties in Georgia’s southwest quadrant.

Rich in its heritage and history, Georgia’s 2nd District contains such tourist destinations like the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center at Fort Benning, The National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus,The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains, as well as the Andersonville National Prisoner of War Museum and the Andersonville National Historic Site.

Although it is populated with communities as diverse as the state itself, the 2nd District is mostly rural and its lifeblood is agriculture.  Georgia produces almost half the total U.S. peanut crop.  Of the 32 counties in the 2nd District, 16 are in the state’s top 25 for peanut production.  Georgia is the top peanut producer in the nation.

Most of Georgia’s 8,000 peanut farms are in the 2nd District.  It is also a large producer of poultry, pecans, peaches and forestry products.

Just as farms and fields are in abundance in the 2nd District, it is also home to several colleges and universities as well – Albany State University; Albany Technical College; Andrew College; Bainbridge College; Darton College; Columbus State University; Columbus Technical College; Fort Valley State University; Georgia Southwestern State University; Thomas College; Bainbridge College; and South Georgia Technical College.

Our national defense relies heavily on installations in the 2nd District.  It contains the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany as well as the nation’s largest training installation, the Fort Benning Maneuver Center of Excellence.
