Full Medical Services Return to Americus After Opening of Sumter Regional East

AMERICUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Thirteen months after an EF-3 tornado destroyed Sumter Regional, hospital employees as well the Americus community came together to celebrate the next step of the rebuilding process, with the ribbon cutting of their new interim medical facility.

The 76-bed hospital comes fully equipped with state of the art technology...some say it's even better than the old hospital.

"It's a surprise how well it came out, seeing it from the beginning... it's just so much more than we expected," said Janice Cottle, an employee at Sumter Regional.

Albany shows what CDBG funds have done for the city

Albany-  Community Development Block Grants have helped Albany improve housing projects across the city, but now that money's in jeopardy.

Wednesday, House and Senate leaders got a tour of Albany housing projects to stress the importance of CDBG funding. Representative from both Senator Saxby Chambliss and Congressman Sanford Bishop's office along with city and county officials toured Albany's Homeless Transitional Facility. Representatives say what Albany's done with their funding is impressive.

"I'm always concerned with the plight of homeless people because that's not an issue that's dealt with on a consistent basis, but I'm just happy to know in Albany they've expressed an interest in it, and they have a transitional housing center to help those affected by the plight of homelessness," said Kenneth Cutts, Congressman Sanford Bishop's spokesman.

From $94,000 for at-risk Lumpkin youth to $1.6 million for a new center for Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, the federal fiscal 2008 budget was rife with millions in line-item appropriations earmarked by the Albany Democrat for the Second Congressional District.

With a parade, a pep rally and a trophy, community gives team an ovation

The sound of victory echoed down Broadway on Sunday afternoon, and it sounded like fire engine sirens, honking horns and the deep boom of bass drums.
Crowds gathered on the streets of downtown Columbus, and later in the Columbus Civic Center, to honor and commemorate the G.W. Carver High School football team, which won the state AAA championship Dec. 15 when it beat Cairo 16-13.
Festivities began with a parade down Broadway. Families, bundled up against a sometimes chilly wind, lined the sidewalks and set up folding chairs on the grassy median to watch.
Feet tapped and torsos bobbed to marching bands as they made their way down the street.
Children swooped to snatch up goodies tossed by local leaders as they slowly passed.
But the best part for Connie Bell of Columbus, who came to the parade with family, was seeing the team, who rode by in the back of honking pickup trucks.
"This is our gift to them," Bell said of showing support for the team.
After the parade, Carver supporters headed to the Columbus Civic Center by the thousands for a celebration that would put any typical high school pep rally to shame.
That afternoon, the Carver High School football players were rock stars.
